How we describe weeds

Weed

A weed is any plant requiring intervention to reduce its detrimental effect on the environment, economy, amenity and human, or animal, health. Weeds compete with and often outperform native plants.

A weed can simply be any plant in the wrong place.

NSW WeedWise

NSW WeedWise contains hundreds of weed profiles, describing:

  • Profile
  • Control (including registered herbicide options)
  • Biosecurity duty (under the Biosecurity Act 2015)

You can search weeds by common name or by scientific name.

OR search by plant characteristics

OR view priority weeds for a region or local council area:

OR do an advanced search

It is a project of NSW Department of Industry.

Plant identification

Currently the smartest plant identifier app is the paid app
PictureThis!

While it sometimes fails to identify Australian native plants, that is usually not a problem with weeds.
