Meek Shall Inherit The Earth 

So fellow meek ones, 6.85 hectares will come into our "possession" (more). 

This week it is back to the Flanagans site where there should be enough to do; if its not too wet. 
Here's what's on offer:
South Bay: bury dead Cockatoo & headless Rabbit if they're still visible. Lantana & Asparagus in NW corner.

Middle Bay: move big log off Saltbush & cut dying Asparagus off Saltbush. Lantana at south end
Little Lantana + Morning Glory NW corner
Rebuild "defences" of our surviving plantings.

North Bay:  Turkey Rhubarb in SW corner. Small Morning Glory & Lantana East side centre.
Fix defences some plantings at north end & water if rain has stayed away.

North Shore: Its looking very good apart from a few weeds at the south end, but there is some rubbish to collect, including along the creek edge.

Bird Flu: Working the back of 2 beaches means its a real possibility that we will encounter Bird Flu victims, struggling or already dead. These will be Seabirds (Gulls, Terns, Gannets), Shorebirds (Herons, Oystercatchers, Plovers) or possibly Raptors ( Osprey, Sea Eagle).  
BIRDS AUSTRALIA advises "don't touch. If there are multiples take photo/video, record location & report it to24 Hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline  1800675888". 

Dog Walkers on McCauleys Beach are also more likely to find victims & are advised that Fido should not be allowed to investigate; apparently dogs are susceptible to the Virus.  

2025 Wind, Waves & Bambi

Weed-seeking will be well down the priorities tomorrow after the depredations of the 3 above over the last few weeks. 

Options offered:

  1. Another deposit of plastics, treated timber & other jetsam has been delivered to the back of the beach. There wasn't a lot on Friday but enough to warrant 2 or 3 of us with pick up sticks & bags to do a lap. There is a big square of sponge rubber just outside the SPATE fence which Uncle Peter Button said we could add to the SPATE pile at the south end of the fence. It will be a good thing to get done at the start of NAIDOC Week. 
    Peter is expecting some NAIDOC campers at SPATE for the week.
  2. Wetness & wind have brought down a number of trees/branches so sawyers are in for a busy morning. There were 2 down on the Dirt Track, a big Casuarina limb at the creek corner & further casualties elsewhere.
  3. Bambi is back & picking on some surprisingly small victims. 
  4. Carers will need secateurs to "clean up" those that seem salvageable and then we'll have to build protections, maybe from the cuttings of the sawyers. A mallet/ heavy hammer will be useful & we could break out our store of wire. I counted 8 victims on Friday & there will likely be more by tomorrow.
  5. Hewitts Ck & the Ditch are down a little so there are jobs weeding, spreading cardboard, cutting & painting regrowth Privet & Olive in Manifest Destiny.
  6. All your "babies" at Flanagans were doing well Saturday.

2024 Cool Climate

We will focus on Lisa's Site, Manifest Destiny & Andrew's Amnesia where there is considerable weediness & some shelter from the southerly.

I've got some more cardboarding on offer and there should be some more chopping/cutting up for those so inclined. Also some Morning Glory sleuthing along the Ditch trees is required.

Warm gear & less than best footwear advisable.

 

2023 An order for another decent rain

There will be enough work to go around:

Some chance of showers Tuesday and we have a couple of areas set for plantings.

A cloud band with some embedded thunderstorms lies over much of Qld, driven by a broad upper trough across the east of the continent. Cloud activity can be seen over NSW associated with a trough that is the remnants of a weakening low about the NSW coast. Lower cloud can be seen in the NSW coast south of Newcastle where moist easterly air has pushed onto the coast.

Why Would Anyone Plan?   We are switching tomorrow's work action to Flanagans Ck, or Tingara Park as its officially known. Forecast is for some possible light morning showers, so rain gear advisable.  At Flanagans tomorrow we'll continue to weed our way south. There may be a rubbish patrol along the back of the beach. I'll bring extra bags again. Choppers /sawyers could cut some of last weeks cuttings into more mulch friendly sizes. 2024 A Diminished Thing Tomorrow begins a new era for our group with our work restricted to areas west of the cycleway. I will produce a full explanation of these changes later in the week. A reminder that our 10th Annual Foundation Picnic is set for Monday 26th August. The waves & tides of the last week have dammed Hewitts Creek & filled it, the shoreline & beyond with sea-wrack so removal of plastic, treated timber & general rubbish will be first task tomorrow. Springing back  We have inserted an experimental Swamp Banksia into Manifest Destiny and there are still 4 or 5 other sapling trees needing protection so if anyone has some spare garden stakes/posts, we still have enough wire to fence them.  On offer: Velcro plant has reappeared beside cycleway, up near the bend creek edge & back of beach have junk deposits from our throw-away society some minor Turkey Rhubarb, Asparagus & Passionfruit growth along creek edge The full weed range on offer in Manifest Destiny with conditions ideal for extraction & some fallen timber cutting up for the sawyers a check along Stony Road & Woodlands Ck   2024 Founding Anniversary picnic Bushcaring to be done: Watering our very (& less) recent plantings there are 3 sizable branches down so sawyers will be welcome Bob will need a pioneering assistant as he forges a track from Manifest Destiny to Hewitts Ck Lilies are trying to pop up but are being chewed off by rabbit...

August 5th week
