June 4th week

We're just weeders & planters  

The sand is piled high on the beach, holding in the highest non-flood water level we've seen, back upstream. The Ditch, half of Lisa's site & much of our newly cleared area by the creek are all under water so we'll try 4 dry areas tomorrow:

  1. south side of the dirt track across to the Blady grass
    Morning Glory, Blackberry, Passionfruit, Lantana
  2. the west edge, from Dirt track north across to Andrews Amnesia
    Morning Glory, Passionfruit, Cassia, Lantana
  3. clear west of the water & back past the Pink Nichols Line over by the creek & maybe lay some weed suppressing cardboard
  4. drive back the evil weeds invading Manifest Destiny from the east
    Cassia, Sorghum, Cape Ivy, Privet et al. 

Could also cut & paint any Privet/Olive regrowth.
It is the time of year for Warrigal Greens.

 

Plant of the Week: Warrigal greens

Native Spinach (Tetragonia tetragonioides)
Much prized by early colonists (& hip restaurateurs) for protection vs Scurvy & even grown in Europe as a curiosity veg in C19th, but "Aboriginal people seldom used it, as the plant's nutritional qualities are negligible".  To prepare, soak in boiling water for 3-5 mins. (This will remove the oxates from the leaves).

Pruning the most edible tender shoots promotes growth according to Diego Bonetto, so go ahead & take home a bag each week & it might overtake all the weeds.

Tasks for tomorrow include:

  • continue attack on Crofton in the southern Blady Grass area.
    Pile it up the Stony Road on the bare patch.
  • 2 dead trees down in the Old Forest, west of the cycleway. Sawyers & chainsawyers needed.
    Cut logs to form mower & track edges.
  • Mother of Millions at Condons Cnr & Firepit.
  • the full gamut of weediness awaits in Manifest Destiny
  • Depending on what the sea & tides have delivered & removed the back beach & creek edge may need non-naturals removed.

2023 Deer activity

There are signs of Deer activity on the site so we should attempt protection for vulnerable saplings. One or two have already been damaged/destroyed. If the wind isn't too bad we should get on the Whiskey (Grass, that is) along the line of the SPATE fence. Secateurs & bags required.

2022 Weed of the Week - Cape Ivy


There will be opportunities for Scrapers & Poisoners at a couple of spots.

Choppers can take on the edges of Manifest Destiny & The Ditch. 

Collectors can pick all the Cape Ivy they like. 

Woodcutters have quite a lot of fallen timber to deal with.

 Likely events As well as the Crofton, Fireweed and Montbretia shooting and flowering, if it rains, even average amount, there will be plenty to do. Turkey Rhubarb will soon flower. 2023 Back to Spring There were a lot of Croftons in flower last week along the Cycleway so it would be good to get them first up. There are also a few small scale weeding jobs waiting, including renewed acquaintance with the Velcro , Asthma & Stonecrop exotics. August 4th week

Planting tomorrow  Most of the sites will be towards Woodlands Ck where salt water isn't a problem so if we all bring a watering can/bottle refills from the shaduf & big container should be pretty efficient. A track making opportunity is now apparent at the far end of Manifest Destiny so Choppers need not despair. 2023 Just smile & nod like normal  Here's the list Ian asked Ted to publish: several smaller jobs along the cycleway a bit of watering for the Woodlands Ck plantings Ross! there appear to be Lilies emerging hammer in steel posts with chicken wire to protect the Condon Cedars (& take a nice pic to send them).  Splitters!! & continue into Manifest Destiny to weed weeds. there's a little high quality sieve work to be done at the Madeira site 2022 Weed of the week  Lambs Tongue or Ribwort Plantain . May 4th week

High Tides The deluge last Thursday night washed the sand out of Hewitts Creek so the lagoon is now 2 metres lower than it was. That may mean the tidal surge will re-flood areas of Manifest Destiny & Lisa's Site . Won't know until we get there tomorrow but as all the low parts of our site were wet on Friday afternoon & Woodlands Creek was still 30 metres wide we'll have to make most of it up as we go tomorrow. Inspecting back of beach will be the first task. The safest bet is to start along the higher & drier Western Edge areas, like Stony Rd , behind the Blady Grass, up the dirt track & across to Andrews Amnesia. Secateurs & bags best for these areas. Brave souls can skirt Lake Zaremba and trust Bruce's rehabilitation of the Gillette Bridge over the Ditch because Madeira Vine is threatening over by the creek &  Lisa's Site needs further work.
