March 3rd week
Flan again Coop 3
Meet at the surf club carpark, again (8:30am).
Rubbish is to be collected into separate bags. Make piles of it, then someone will bag it and take it to the street bins. Restrict the use of the white woven plastic bags to vegetable matter.
The main job is Asparagus Fern. There is a lot on this site, but don't touch any growing on the top of the sand cliffs.
Reading the Wollongong Environment and Conservation Volunteer News (2026 Autumn) we hear about the nearby Wombarra Bushcare group "crowning asparagus" by just removing the woody growing point or corm. This action limits the soil disturbance while also reducing the amount needed to be bagged to just that corm. The other bits can go into any open areas.
The crowing tool is a Jab Saw or the cheaper one above is a Craftright 150mm wallboard saw. They are both made for poking holes through plaster board walls. They are priced below $10, a good idea considering that the saw will quickly be blunted.
There is an excess of Morning glory and Turkey Rhubarb in the south end of Coop 2. Bag it all.
Lantana - only chop the bits competing with native plants. Also observe and decide which native plants to prefer over the native vine Cayratia clematidea.
Chop and drop any dead twigs into the open areas.
2025 Return to Flanagans Ck site
Here is hoping that we can concentrate on the next 10-15m south along the log fence but there are a couple of patches from our previous visit that need more work. So it will be more secateur & bag work (I have a lot of bags) on Morning glory, some cut & paint or dig out on Asparagus Fern & quite a bit of Lantana chopping.
2024 & 2023 Cool & Grey
Rain + heat can only have meant rapid growth over the last 2 weeks. We'll need to survey the scene in our best areas first and start work where its most needed. Showers are forecast but the Bureau of Meteorology has them only arriving in the evening but should they chase us away from open areas we can retreat back to leafy zones.
2022 Priorities
If numbers allow, some Cassia are flowering lately, so choppers may have self-identifying victims to pursue. There will be enough to go round,
